چکیده

Wrist arthritis, whether caused by trauma, instability, or inflammatory arthropathy, is one of the most common conditions treated by hand surgeons. The manage ment of wrist arthritis varies with the severity and etiology of the pathology, with the common goal of achieving pain free function. The progressive nature of arthritis dictates that while any number of conservative treatments may be effective in relieving symptoms, continued loading of an arthritic joint will result in the need for further intervention. In patients with painful and dysfunctional arthritic wrists who have failed conser va tive management, surgical interventions are generally grouped into one of three surgical categories: ablation, arthrodesis, or arthroplasty. Each option has a unique set of advantages and disadvantages.

Comparison of complication rates between hemiarthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty for intracapsular hip fractures.

Hip fractures are common and have come to represent an increasing burden of disease. As a result, it is critical that cost-effective and evidence-based treatments be used to treat hip fractures. However, with regard to hemiarthroplasty vs total hip arthroplasty (THA), the optimal treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients remains controversial. The purpose of this study w...

Arthrodesis and Hemiarthroplasty: Different Techniques in the Treatment of Hallux Rigidus—Surgery and Postoperative Rehabilitation

Hallux rigidus (HR) is a progressive degenerative pathology affecting the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The aim of the present study is to report our experience on the treatment of HR patients with two different surgical methods: arthrodesis and hemiarthroplasty. Twelve patients (14 HR) underwent surgery for HR from July 2004 to October 2009. Median age was 58 years (Interquartile Range (IQR...

More complications in uncemented compared to cemented hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fractures: a randomized controlled trial of 201 patients, with one year follow-up

BACKGROUND It is unclear whether cemented or uncemented hemiarthroplasty is the best treatment option in elderly patients with displaced femoral neck fractures. Previous randomized trials comparing cemented and uncemented hemiarthroplasty have conflicting results. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to compare cemented and uncemented hemiarthroplasty. METHODS This multicenter parallel-...

Mid term results of Furlong LOL uncemented hip hemiarthroplasty for fractures of the femoral neck.

We report the mid-term results of hemiarthroplasty with the Furlong hydroxyapatite coated bipolar prosthesis for displaced (Garden type III and IV) intracapsular hip fracture in 480 patients operated between 1989 and 2000. Three hundred sixty eight (77%) patients were lost to follow-up due to death, dementia or movement away from the area. In the patients followed up there was an 8% reoperation...

Cemented versus non-cemented hemiarthroplasty of the hip as a treatment for a displaced femoral neck fracture: design of a randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND A discussion is ongoing whether displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients should be treated with a non-cemented or a cemented hemiarthroplasty. A recent Cochrane analysis stresses the importance of further research into the relative merits of these techniques. We hypothesise that non-cemented hemiarthroplasty will result in at least the same technical-functional outcome an...
